Fierce Focus #3: Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R.-GA)
"The real cancer for the Republican Party is weak Republicans who only know how to lose gracefully. This is why we are losing our country."
How could The Notorious MTG not be the next subject of our Fierce Focus series? She’s made some … questionable … statements, ruffled a lot of feathers, ticked off both the left and the right and is all DC can talk about right now.
So, who is Marjorie Taylor Greene? Well, for starters, she is the newly elected congresswoman from Georgia’s 14th congressional district, although she lives in the 6th CD. She’s a wife and mother of three. She and her husband own a construction company and have employed thousands of Americans in several states. She’s an avid Crossfitter, even starting and selling her own gym. And she’s a lightning rod for controversy.
She’s been accused by both Democrats and Republicans of embracing conspiracy theories, with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell just yesterday calling her a “cancer” on the Republican party, adding:
"Somebody who's suggested that perhaps no airplane hit the Pentagon on 9/11, that horrifying school shootings were pre-staged, and that the Clintons crashed JFK Jr.'s airplane is not living in reality. This has nothing to do with the challenges facing American families or the robust debates on substance that can strengthen our party."
MTG didn’t let that one slide, responding:
“The real cancer for the Republican Party is weak Republicans who only know how to lose gracefully. This is why we are losing our country.”
Some in Congress want her stripped of her committee assignments. Others want her thrown out altogether. Which begs the question: What did she really do or say to incur the rancor of so many in Washington?
Well, there are a few topics of contention, as noted in McConnell’s statement. MTG has denied many of the accusations, especially the ones centered around her social media activity, stating that many different people had control of her accounts over the years. She recently tweeted:
"Over the years, I've had teams of people manage my pages. Many posts have been liked. Many posts have been shared. Some did not represent my views.”
It’s important to note that all of the comments in question were made before MTG decided to run for office. Do the elites in DC truly want to make a precedent of ousting sitting members for comments they — or their staff — made while private citizens? Perhaps that’s the right thing to do, but it must be a rule that is applied equally, regardless of party, seniority or how much the mainstream media likes you.
The most bandied-about accusation against MTG is that she’s a QAnon supporter. The Daily Wire’s take on this includes a quote:
“Q is a patriot, we know that for sure,” Greene said in a 2017 video. “There’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take this global cabal of Satan-worshiping pedophiles out, and I think we have the president to do it,” Greene said, referring to Trump and the conspiracy theory.
Was Greene guilty of falling for the idea that an underground superhero was going to make sure the bad guys would finally get their comeuppance? Apparently so. Did she put her faith in Donald Trump to root out the deep-state and drain the Swamp? Sure seems that way. But, then again, so did millions of Americans. To put things in context — and context matters! — the country had just transitioned from eight years of Obama/Biden trampling all over the Constitution to Donald Trump, the businessman and DC outsider, promising to, well, make America great again. Can you blame everyday Americans, Obama’s “bitter clingers”, for welcoming that?
MTG’s Facebook account also agreed with a comment that the 2018 shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL, was a “false flag”. A false flag accusation doesn’t deny an act took place, but questions who is responsible for it.
And The Daily Wire, using videos uncovered by CNN, summed up some of the other accusations against MTG this way:
In one post, from January 2019, Greene liked a comment that said “a bullet to the head would be quicker” to remove House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. In other posts, Greene liked comments about executing FBI agents who, in her eyes, were part of the “deep state” working against Trump.
In one Facebook post from April 2018, Greene wrote conspiratorially about the Iran Deal, one of former President Barack Obama’s signature foreign policy achievements. A commenter asked Greene, “Now do we get to hang them ?? Meaning H & O ???,” referring to Obama and Hillary Clinton.
Greene replied, “Stage is being set. Players are being put in place. We must be patient. This must be done perfectly or liberal judges would let them off.”
Again, not dissimilar to how a lot of Americans felt at the time, but certainly ill-advised reactions from someone with their eye on elected office.
Let’s put social media aside and take a look at what Rep. Greene has done since taking the oath of office at the beginning of January. According to her congressional website, she has co-sponsored the following bills:
The Glory Only Act (H.R. 85), which would ensure that only the American flag flies over U.S. embassies.
The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act to prohibit men from unfairly competing against women in sports.
The Conception Act (H.R. 616) and the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act (H.R. 962), both critical pieces of pro-life legislation.
The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act (H.R. 38) and the Hearing Protection Act (H.R. 155) to expand the rights of gun owners.
She has also introduced Articles of Impeachment against Joe Biden.
Love her or hate her, at least you know what you’re getting with Marjorie Taylor Greene. She’s transparent. She’s not your typical politician and she doesn’t fit into the nice, neat categories favored by the political elite. There’s no question where she stands on the issues and what she truly believes, something that cannot be said for far too many politicians whose allegiances depend on how much cash is being stuffed into their pockets at any given time.
The GOP must tread carefully here, as allowing the left to oust her from Congress will not sit well with many in the grassroots, a faction already bristling over the lack of conservative leadership. So, too, would they be well-advised to harness her fierceness and work with her to ensure that the focus shifts dramatically away from conspiracy theories and squarely toward measures that will fight the left’s radical agenda.
